Adult DVD – Jesus Christ Supercar
Vintage synth lines straight out of an old arcade racing game, a garage-rock shove underneath, and a character who would sooner find an excuse than start anything. “Jesus Christ Supercar” is Adult DVD at their most mischievous: a pun for a title, and a song about people who talk themselves out of every task before they’ve tried it. Harry Hanson has said none of the band’s songs come from their perspective, and the excuses here belong to someone else entirely, with the band just turning them up loud. It’s the yin to “Do Something” from the Next Day Shipping EP, and the fifth track on the Leeds six-piece’s self-titled debut, out September 25 on Fat Possum Records UK.
Real Tree Lee (W04) went after conspiracy culture and Rolling Face (W33) went full rave, while this one leans toward the guitar end of the record, and it’s the catchiest of the three. The visualiser comes from footage guitarist and synth player Danny Blackburn shot on the road this year, and the band describe him as “artistically like Tarantino, just without the foot fetish and not a wanker”.
